Tracking down soap factories in 19th century Jamaica is quite intriguing; anyone out there who has done this already??
At the very end of the century it is clear that globalisation was already in full force - why try to produce in the island things that could be more cheaply imported from abroad? Of course this had always been the issue from the days when Jamaica was almost entirely devoted to producing sugar, one of the first truly 'globalised' commodities.
However even then there were those who believed that Jamaica should be producing for its own consumption every commodity which could be produced in the island. I can only say 'HEAR, HEAR;!!!!
